Window Jamb Extensions

Whilst we wait for the fireplace stone veneer to be completed (sometime this week) I got started on extending the window jambs.

The windows for the Ground Floor are the same as the ones on the main floor, however, the Ground Floor has 2x6 exterior walls, whereas the rest of the house (main and second floor) are 2x4 framing.

I purchased clear pine 2x6 boards and ripped them down to the needed depth for the jambs. The radial arm saw works great but I'm not sure it is my friend. It is very very messy (I have to wear full protection whenever operating the saw) and I find it a more dangerous tool than say, a table saw. But it is more versatile.

I then built up the jamb 'boxes' with 10D nails, and then placed them in the window frame. Once done shimming, I nailed into place. So far, 3 of the window jamb extensions are complete.

Here's the first one. Notice the difference it makes, and the window casing is not even installed yet!

The fiberglass window frames are a tad bit warped. I'll add flexible quarter-round (or maybe square) to cover up the 1/16" gap, plus to hide more of the white fiberglass frame (this will be stained wood. Wood-framed windows would be best, but I had to cut back the spending somewhere....)

Here's all three windows in the play/game room with their jamb extensions.

Another shot. Unfortunately, for the time being we are regressing from the cheapo plastic ventian blinds all the way to the temporary paper blinds. Once the window frames are complete (casing included) they need to be stained and then real blinds installed.

These windows are not as warped, but still gonna get addition molding

Two more windows to do, then on to window and door casing. And hopefully, the fireplace stone work will be complete this week.

Hoping to get as far along as I can so that I can stain the doors and trim, and paint the walls, while it is still nice enough weather outside to air out the fumes.....I figure I have 3-4 more weeks of nice fall weather......here's hoping!
